Avaya UK: MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS

The MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team competes in the FIA Formula One World Championship and takes part in up to 20 races around the world each year. To succeed it must make the most of its global resources. Exceptional collaboration underpins its efforts.
"In the past we had to bring numerous people from across EMEA to our HQ in the UK for a single meeting. Using the Avaya Flare Experience interface implemented on the Avaya Desktop Video Device, we aim to simplify our users’ ability to access and interact, making video conferencing more effective."- Matt Harris, Head of IT, MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS
Central skills, global commitments
MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS is one of Formula One’s top teams with a driver line-up of Michael Schumacher, the seven times World Champion, and Nico Rosberg, son of the 1982 World Champion Keke Rosberg. The 2011 season was solid with the team finishing fourth in the Constructors’ Championship.
Like any organisation operating in a competitive environment, it has to do more with less. The difference with Formula One is that failure is very public and the work is relentlessly global. The season lasts from March to November, with 20 races due to take place during the 2012 season, with a team of 60 de-camping to each event.
“We have over 500 people working here, but with all the travelling involved in a race season I probably see some of them for no more than four weeks of the year,” says Matt Harris, Head of IT, MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS. To be effective, the organisation needs a high degree of collaboration, getting the most out of the team on the ground at the race track and those back at the factory. Underpinning this is the need for clear, reliable communications.
“In the past we had to bring numerous people from across EMEA to our HQ in the UK for a single meeting.  Using the Avaya Flare Experience interface implemented on the Avaya Desktop Video Device, we aim to simplify our users’ ability to access and interact, making video conferencing more effective. This will mean we are able to bring more people into critical meetings without them losing the travel time.  It means we can have the best minds in our business in attendance, without taking them away from their day-to-day job,” concludes Harris.
The future is likely to see further pressure on experts’ availability and an increasingly hectic schedule. Pressure on resources will remain; new regulations will have to be met. The team’s communication infrastructure must be able to take the strain.
The Avaya Flare Experience is helping to speed critical decision making and those decisions might just help the car go faster.
Challenges
  • Simplify communication, create infrastructure for collaboration and extract maximum value from expert advisors anywhere in the world.
  • All improvements to be made against backdrop of tightening budgets: any spare funding must be channelled into maximising the cars’ performance.
Value Created
  • Greater access to expertise, leading to faster decision making: able to involve more specialists more of the time and run multiple conference calls
  • Potential to reduce travel costs as video conferencing becomes easier and more viable, saving budget for race-related improvements
